It is true, we cannot speak of a government without including its institutions. They are one in the same. The education department, the health department and of course Eskom just to name a few. There is no doubt that the various institutions were made to make it easier to govern, and difficult to serve.
Governments today receive a lot of criticism because of their inability to serve. Mostly because we put our trust in people who can acquire the most votes. And not in people who can actually do the job. Which brings me to ask then, that what is the best form of government?
Or better still, is there a way to better use our current institutions to provide the good life for the people? Perhaps we need different institutions. But that would require a revolution and revolutions are painful. Maybe our current institutions are simply there to provide us an opportunity to acquire the good life. Which seems to me like a ‘carrot and a stick’ situation.
Whatever the case maybe, it is clear that most people are unhappy with their current governments. The very nature of our government gives us the illusion that a hero will come and save us. And our education system does not help. Because if I told my grade 1 teacher that I wanted to be a doctor when I grow up. Then my training to be a doctor should have begun in grade 1 and not years later.
